LinkedIn's best value is helping connect the dots. Use LinkedIn to find the hiring manager. Use LinkedIn to find the right contact at a business. Use LinkedIn to find former classmates.
BUT I THOUGHT THAT WAS WHAT FACEBOOK WAS FOR?
It can be. Think about how many people you know that actually leave their employer space blank on Facebook. Think about how many people never talk about work. Think about how hard it can be to search for people unless you have very specific information about them. LinkedIn gives you the ability to find people, figure out how you are connected to them and what you have in common. LinkedIn is optimized for searching with criteria. If you are going on a job interview, wouldn't it be good to know information about the person you are meeting with? Information like, how long have they worked here? Where did they work before? How much experience do they have in this role? If you go on a job interview, wouldn't it be useful to know that a friend of yours just left the company? Or if another friend just started working there, knowing why for that too!
PROPER PREPARATION PREVENTS...
Hopefully you know the rest of that old saying. The idea is, don't go in blind. If you are going to call on a prospective customer, just how many of your competitors are already connected to them? How many of your truly good friends are connected to them? Did they go to the same college as you? Are they active in the community? Are they passionate about things that you are passionate about too?
IT'S NOT JUST PREPARATION IT'S LEVERAGE
People embrace the "tribe" mentality. In other words, if they perceive they have a common bond or interest with you, it creates immediate trust and likeability. Those characteristics make the process 100% easier.
