If you have been on LinkedIn for more than a few months you probably came across a person's profile that says L.I.O.N. or perhaps just "lion." If you were curious to what that means but never looked it up, it means "LinkedIn Open Networker."
WHY BE A LION?
I really like the idea of being a LION. They are open networkers and they want to help people (and in turn help themselves). By adding LION to your profile, you can quickly add connections and grow your network.
WHY IS A BIGGER NETWORK BETTER?
A bigger network means you increase the likelihood of connecting with the right people to do business. You get closer to connections that can introduce you to the right people for you to make business deals happen or for recruiters to find you.
A WORD OF CAUTION
It is important to recognize that if you decide to become a LION that you will openly accept ANY connection request. More importantly, you must be willing to help someone, even if you don't know them all that well or the person they want you to introduce them to. Introductions are what make the world go round and LION's are the glue to bind together your LinkedIn network.
BUT MIKE, YOUR NOT A LION, WHY NOT?
Good question. I am very open about accepting connection requests, but I do make people work a little for it. In October 2014 I wrote this article about connecting with people. The basic point is, if you are going to reach out to me for a connection at least tell me why. Take the 30 seconds to erase the generic message and write something personal. Most people do not take this step. I take the time to give them a second chance. I will respond to their request and ask them what their thoughts are on helping one another and I give them 3 days to respond (five if there is a weekend involved, I'll talk about that in my next post). What I have found is the majority of people who I follow up with do NOT respond. And what I mean by majority is about 95%. It's important to note, I never have that problem with a LION.
IT'S DECISION TIME!
Will you become a LION and open your network to opportunities? Will you continue on as you have been or will you choose to follow my model?
