I spend a great deal of time looking over LinkedIn profiles for people. The first thing to realize is, every profile has room for improvement. I look at mine daily to find edits that will enhance my presence. It is important to indicate there is a REAL sliding scale between great profiles and terrible profiles. Tell me how you feel about the following:
"A seasoned team building expert, with effective and creative problem solving skills. Motivated to be a results driven professional."
Any guess what is wrong with this? Absolutely Zero. There is ZERO "you content" in this statement. It is all fluff. ANYONE can say these things about themselves. More importantly, no potential customer or job recruiter will use ANY of these words to find you. Any time you use one of these words (or a host of others, you get the idea) you have wasted space, because, these words are all subjective. They are your opinion, of you. Now read this and tell me what you think:
"Mike is a seasoned team building expert with effective and creative problem solving skills. Mike is motivated to be a results driven professional."
So what's the difference? In the second example, someone wrote it about me! Someone else thinks very highly of me and THAT is what you want.

Create a concise and accurate profile
Connect with as many people as you know. I emphasize "know."
Ask For Recommendations
This list encompass a great deal of effort and hard work. But once it is set up, maintenance is fairly simple (and in my opinion fun). So the question becomes
WHAT KEY WORDS SHOULD I USE?
A great example of a key word is "Award." People will seek award winners. But again don't describe your self as an "award winning novelist" or "award winning scientist." Think about it, does the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize describe themselves as "award winning?" NO! Other people do that, to pay tribute to their success.When you have an accolade, it is best to clearly define it within the appropriate section. For example: under job history "Presidents Club 2014" or under college: "Graduated 1995 Magna Cum Laude." You make a simple statement that honestly depicts your achievement.
Then there are industry specific key words. I have been in the technology industry since 1999, as a result my headline and the body of my profile both have many key words that a potential client or a recruiter would search for and that is what you want.

When you say nice things about you, it's arrogant. When others say nice things about you, it is ABSOLUTE GOLD. Get out there, make connections, ask for recommendations and then watch the opportunities come to you.
