On LinkedIn A Picture Tells More Than A Thousand Words

Our profile picture is a powerful way to establish a high level of professionalism. However, it can easily work against you if not chosen wisely. Here are some suggestions and best practices.

NO PICTURE? MEANS LAZY OR ARROGANT.

Follow me on this. The idea behind LinkedIn, is to enhance your professional image to attract employers, customers and business partners. Unless you have an uncommon name, multiple people pop up in a name search. Your profile picture is how people can quickly identify you. If you cannot take the five minutes necessary to upload a picture, what does that say about you professionally? Or, If you believe yourself so well known and so easily identified that you don't need a profile picture, then you're just being arrogant.

WHAT IS A "BAD" PICTURE?

To understand what is a bad picture, I will instead explain, what a good picture looks like. A good picture is a close up of your face with a clear image. That may seem like common sense, but, if you quickly scroll through the "people you may know" section of your home page, you will notice that many people don't follow those simple guidelines. Generally a picture of your entire body will put your face too far from the camera to be clear. Posing on your car or, with your spouse, your children, or your pet is unprofessional. Remember, this isn't Facebook. LinkedIn is for business networking. You're profile picture establishes the professionalism of your profile with the very first glance.

A SMALL INVESTMENT YIELDS BIG DIVIDENDS.

Depending on where you live, a "Professional Head Shot" will cost you $50-$100. You should update it about every five years to keep it looking relevant and fresh. This is a small investment that goes a long way to making a strong first impression.
